The Synthwave / Retro Electro playlist is a genre-defining collection of synthwave music featuring a highly curated mix from nearly 300 artists. Started in early 2013, the playlist has consistently featured the best new music in the genre, and since 2014, it has remained the most popular and most followed independent playlist dedicated to synthwave music.

The playlist reached 75,000 followers in April 2019.

Like the synthwave genre itself, the Synthwave / Retro Electro playlist is in a constant state of evolution. Older tracks are steadily trimmed out as new, more talented, and more innovative songwriters contribute their work to the style. The edges of the playlist are also being constantly redefined as synthwave expands deeper into the darksynth, cyberpunk synthwave, and popwave styles.

However, the playlist always has and always will be anchored in the sounds of early outrun artists, including Miami Nights 1984, Lost Years, and Mitch Murder. The further music strays from those formative releases in terms of style, the less likely it is to be included in the playlist. For more information on how music is defined for the list, check out the article What is Synthwave? 2018 Edition.

Every song that goes into the playlist is previewed multiple times, ensuring the quality of the mix remains consistently high. Roughly 25,000 songs have been previewed for the playlist to date, which means that only 3.5 percent of them have made the cut.

As with all music promotions from Iron Skullet, the emphasis for the playlist remains on choosing the best music within the genre regardless of where the artist’s work has been promoted before and whether or not it’s backed by a record label. No artist is too new or too small to be included in the playlist.

Music is always being considered for the list through the submissions page, and you can support this playlist by contributing on Patreon.
